Evolution of Identity

$1,540.00

Anai Garcia Mendez
Evolution of Identity, 2024
Acrylic on canvas
12 x 16 inches

This painting marks a significant milestone in my life journey: the acceptance of my Mexican identity after 18 years of denial. This artwork is meant to solidify my identity to myself. The inclusion of Monarch Butterflies are central to this piece as they are a profound cultural symbol in Mexico. Additionally, butterflies are known for going through a process called metamorphosis. This process of transformation from an immature form to an adult form mirrors my personal mindset from self-hate to self-acceptance.

Mexican art is known for its use of bright and saturated colors, and I have embraced this in my work to pay homage to my heritage. Furthermore, the inclusion of the lotus flower in the design symbolizes the rebirth of my identity. Just as the lotus blooms anew, I too have experienced a rebirth in embracing my roots and cultural background.

This painting not only encapsulates my journey of acceptance but also foreshadows my future artistic endeavors. Moving forward, I will delve deeper into exploring and celebrating my Mexican heritage through my art, allowing it to enrich my creative expression.
